The interior of the Dallas Cowboys‘ offensive line took yet another hit when the team lost starting center and 2024 third round pick, Cooper Beebe, to injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain.

“Cowboys center Cooper Beebe,” Rapoport wrote on Monday, “a key part of their stellar O-line, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a high-ankle sprain, sources say. He’s almost certainly headed to Injured Reserve, but should be back in the second half of the season.”
As a result, Dallas will likely start Brock Hoffman in Beebe’s stead, but it still leaves the position group lacking depth behind him, with TJ Bass and Trevor Keegan – the latter of whom has never started an NFL game – as the only options on the active roster.
Cowboys Working Out Former Colt As They Search For IOL Depth
So it figure that the Cowboys could look to bolster the unit, and it seems like they have very much considered doing so as well, as Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports that the team has worked out both Wesley French and Jacob Bayer.

“Cowboys tried out a pair of centers Jacob Bayer and Wesley French. Guard Thomas Perry also worked out. With Cooper Beebe going on IR/return, Cows looking for a little depth.”
The pair are an interesting choice of interior offensive linemen for head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, and the rest of the offensive staff to eye as potential backups on the roster, or possible practice squad additions who could see themselves obtaining game-day elevation status.
The biggest significance of the team’s choice of workout players is the fact that both are, first and foremost, centers by trade.
Now Hoffman has been forced to step into a starting role, the depth at center specifically – beyond just generic interior offensive line, could be a concern for Dallas.
Although guard, TJ Bass, has experience moving inside to play the pivot, it is not his natural position, and the 2023 UDFA generally excels more adjacent to the tackle.
Who Are Wesley French And Jacob Bayer?
Bayer is a rookie undrafted free agent, who was originally signed by the Buffalo Bills before getting released ahead of final roster cuts in late August. But French is the more eye-raising tryout player. The former Western Michigan man was undrafted coming out of the 2022 NFL draft, before getting picked up by the Indianapolis Colts.
In his sophomore pro-season, French played in all 17 games, starting 3 in lieu of the now-recently departed Ryan Kelly.
French never managed to build on that 2023 momentum, much of which was due to suffering a season-ending ankle injury in 2024. Although he was bought back to Indy in 2025, he was ultimately cut last month ahead of the start of the regular season.
Now, as Dallas lose another interior offensive lineman, after Robert Jones suffered a neck injury in training camp – which ultimately resulted in him being moved to season-ending injured reserve in early August, they must try to configure viable alternatives in the case of anything else going awry.
A signing like French could certainly be a sensible insurance plan.
