Unai Emery is hopeful that Youri Tielemans will return to action for Aston Villa within the next fortnight.
The Belgian midfielder suffered a calf injury in the first half of Villa’s Premier League clash against Everton last weekend. He was replaced by Evann Guessand, as Emery opted to move John McGinn into the double pivot alongside Lamare Bogarde.
The pair continued in midfield at the Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday night, given Emery’s limited options.
However, Boubacar Kamara did return to the matchday squad and is in contention to start against Sunderland on Sunday.
Amadou Onana remains sidelined, though Emery is optimistic that the 24-year-old will be available again soon.
Meanwhile, Ross Barkley is currently dealing with a personal issue and has yet to feature this season.
Following Villa’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Brentford via penalties, Emery was asked when he expects Tielemans to return.
“It is better than we expected,” he responded. “Maybe in one or two weeks he will be available.”
