The summer transfer window closed barely a fortnight ago, but attention is already turning to the market reopening this winter.

Manchester United losing the Manchester derby 3-0 to Manchester City in their first match following its closure has hardly changed the feeling that they did not manage to do all the business they needed. The club focused on their front line, signing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha before belatedly bringing in goalkeeper Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day.

However, no move for a midfielder materialised. United's well-documented interest in Carlos Baleba did not lead to any summer switch.

They delayed any move for the Brighton & Hove Albion player, who would be keen to sign for the club, until next year. However, much could change in the three-and-a-half months before 2026 begins.

Not least, Ruben Amorim could no longer be United's head coach. The Manchester Evening News understands that he retains the support of their hierarchy, with a source close to Amorim admitting it is "incredible" that his position is not under genuine threat.

However, the Mirror reports that they will assess the situation during next month's international break. They highlight Andoni Iraola, Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva, Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner from the candidates listed by bookmakers.

Appointing the latter from that list could aid United in any attempts to sign Adam Wharton. The midfielder has made all but three of his 49 appearances for Crystal Palace in the 18 months since Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson.

They are one of several clubs credited with an interest in the England international whom Southgate gave his sole senior cap to date last summer. Real Madrid is another team reportedly keen on the 21-year-old; therefore, Glasner could give United an edge in any potential bidding war for Wharton next year.
