'That's a big thing': Tyler Onyango tells Alan Myers exactly why he wanted to leave Everton on…

Tyler Onyango has spoken out on his loan exit from Everton for the 2025/26 campaign after re-joining Stockport County.

A busy summer transfer window can now be put in the past for David Moyes, who will have full focus on this weekend’s Merseyside Derby.

Everton have remained unbeaten since their opening day defeat away to Leeds United at Elland Road.

New faces on Merseyside have certainly played their role in the improved form being shown by the Toffees, with the likes of Jack Grealish winning the Player of the Month award for August.

There were plenty of exits from Finch Farm over the course of the summer and some went right down to the final hours.

Onyango was strongly linked with a return to Stockport early in the window and his departure was sealed on deadline day.

Everton News columnist Alan Myers has since spoken to the 22-year-old, who has shared his expectations for the coming year.

Just months on from his departure, it is a new look Everton, with the Friedkins placing the club in a stable position financially.

Following so many new additions over the summer, Onyango sought regular minutes elsewhere and spoke to Myers about his expectations on The Added Time podcast.

“I think there’s so many benefits [to his loan]. I think in an ideal world as a young player you go out and play every game, start every game,” he told the Everton News columnist.

“Obviously, it’s exposure, whether you’re dealing with a relegation battle and the pressures of that. Just going into the changing room and into a men’s environment for the first time – that’s a big thing. It’s totally different to U21s football, where people’s jobs and careers are on the line. So, it means a lot to people and to us.

“It’s massive. It’s so good for your development as a person and a player.”

A clear maturity shown by the versatile midfielder, which will surely be appreciated by Moyes who will be keeping an eye on the Englishman.

Onyango was not the only Everton midfielder to depart on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, with Harrison Armstrong loaned out to Preston North End.

The 22-year-old spent last season at Stockport, but his season was cut short through an injury picked up in November.

Stockport are delighted to have Onyango back on loan

Since returning to the League One outfit, manager Dave Challinor has started Onyango in both league games.

League One vs Position Minutes

Plymouth Argyle CB 66

Cardiff City RM 82

Interestingly, the versatile 22-year-old has played in both defence and midfield in those two games against Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City, respectively.

And that is a trait which the Stockport manager is extremely impressed with and a big reason as to why he was brought back for this season.

“Hopefully now he can pick up where he finished off with us the last time he was here – we’re really looking forward to seeing him get started this time,” said Challinor.

“His athleticism, pace, power and ability to play in numerous positions will be invaluable to us and, importantly, he already knows us and knows what we’re about.”

Everton signed Merlin Rohl on deadline day, which leaves the likes of Onyango and Armstrong with a lot to prove to Moyes in their respective loan stints.
