Anthony Gordon is eligible for Newcastle United’s Champions League clash against Barcelona.

New signings Jacob Ramsey (ankle) and Yoane Wissa (knee) missed the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday and are expected to remain sidelined until next month.

But returning to the matchday squad is Anthony Gordon, whose last appearance in black and white came against boyhood club Liverpool on August 25, which ended in a late 3-2 defeat.

Gordon was shown a straight red card in the first half for a late challenge on Virgil van Dijk and as a result was handed a three-match suspension.

The 24-year-old still has one game left to serve on that ban, however, Premier League red cards do not carry over into the Champions League, making him eligible to feature versus the Spanish giants.

Gordon will, however, miss Sunday’s long trip to AFC Bournemouth before being available for the midweek Carabao Cup third round tie against Bradford City and the visit of Arsenal in the Premier League next Sunday.

Before his red card, Gordon had been acting as an emergency striker for Newcastle after Alexander Isak refused to play in his successful attempt to force through a move to Liverpool.

Since then, the Magpies have signed two strikers. Wissa, as mentioned, is unavailable, but £69million club-record Nick Woltemade is expected to retain his place up top after he scored the winner on his debut against Wolves at the weekend.

“Harvey Barnes has been given a golden opportunity this season to grasp that left wing position by Gordon’s madness, and he hasn't looked anything like grabbing it, I think he's been really disappointing.

“He was given an opportunity first because they didn't have a striker, so Gordon had to be shifted out there, and Gordon literally gift-wrapped that left wing position for him by a bit of over-exuberance, I'll call it, against Liverpool.

“I don't think he's got the same qualities or skillset as Anthony Gordon, I don't think they're really close. But it was a big opportunity for him to come in and make it hard for the manager. I don't think he's made it hard for Eddie Howe to bring Anthony Gordon back.”
