Mateo Joseph has done what no Leeds attacker has done this season – Spanish media ‘blown away’

The loss to Fulham over the weekend seems to have removed all the positives from Leeds United fans. It is all now doom and gloom around the club heading into future games.

Many think that the inactivity on deadline day is really affecting the club, and the results can be seen on the pitch. Saturday marked the third game in all competitions this season that Leeds failed to find the back of the net.

After spending close to £100million on the squad, there are still no player who are clinical in front of goal. Leeds brought in Noah Okafor on a permanent deal from AC Milan, and added Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on free transfers. Out of close to £100million spent, just a fraction of it was used on an important part of the team.

Saturday saw Okafor and Calvert-Lewin handed their first league starts against Fulham. While the Swiss international showed promising signs, the former Everton striker missed a big chance in the first half and was absent all game till he was substituted.

Two goals in five games means the shakeup in attack has not benefitted the club in any way yet. Only one goal this season has been scored by a Leeds United attacker.

Mateo Joseph was in action for Mallorca on Monday night, in what many consider to be his best performance since he joined on loan. The forward was directly involved in his team’s first goal on the night. He was pulled down in the box when he attempted to score from a cross. His attitude on the pitch impressed Zona 10’s Mallorca writer Juanmi Sanchez who wrote:

Mateo Joseph no estará acertado de cara a portería, pero no para de partirse la cara por el equipo. Ahora, con el pitido final de la primera parte, ha dado la mano y animado a todos sus compañeros antes de marcharse al vestuario. Actitud de diez. Sumar.

“Mateo Joseph may not be on target, but he doesn’t stop fighting hard. Now, after the half-time whistle, he has shaken hands and encouraged all his teammates going to the locker room. Top-notch attitude.”

Leeds United need a spark in attack

Joseph directly winning a penalty for his team to score is more than any current Leeds attacker has done this season. Outside flashes here and there, not many players have stood out. Daniel Farke has a lot of things to sort out in the team ahead of their next game against Fulham.

The youngster is yet to score or assist on loan, but the signs on the pitch are very promising.
