Barcelona want at least €50 million to sanction the departure of their defensive mainstay, Ronald Araujo, amid interest from Liverpool.
According to a report from Fichajes, Ronald Araujo could part ways with Barcelona next summer, having lost prominence in the team in recent years. Liverpool have emerged as an ideal destination for the Uruguayan international, but they will have to fork out in excess of €50 million to acquire his services.
Araujo joined Barcelona in the summer of 2018. He got promoted to their first team in 2020 and went from strength to strength. The South American defender established himself as one of their mainstays. However, the recent seasons have not gone according to plan for him.
Following an injury last season, he lost his place in the team, with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez becoming the go-to pairing for Hansi Flick. With Inigo Martinez leaving the club, Araujo was expected to regain prominence. However, things have not gone according to plan for him.
The 26-year-old has not had the best of starts to the season, and Eric Garcia has replaced him in the starting XI in recent fixtures. If things carry on in a similar fashion, Araujo could look to part ways with the club.
While his contract runs until 2031, Barcelona could also look to cash in on him. However, the Blaugrana will only negotiate his departure if an interested club comes forward with an offer worth at least €50 million.
Liverpool could sign Araujo this summer
Premier League clubs have often been linked with the 28-year-old, and despite his inconsistent performances, Liverpool seem quite keen on signing Ronald Araujo, and they can certainly afford to meet Barcelona’s demands.
The Reds are looking to prepare for life without Ibrahima Konate. The French defender’s contract is running out, and he could end up leaving the club for free. If reports are to be believed, he is closing in on a move to Real Madrid.
With Konate’s departure likely, they have identified Araujo as an ideal replacement. The South American defender has a strong physical presence and enough experience to quickly adapt to the demands of English football.
The funds raised from Araujo’s departure could help them balance their books and make room for potential new signings. Meanwhile, the Uruguayan international could have a more prominent role if he chooses to leave the club.
