If there's one thing that every Everton supporter can agree on, it's the fact that the club is very thin at both fullback positions, particuarly at right back.
With the Toffees undergoing a massive squad overhaul this summer, any reasonable fan knew that every hole could not be filled in one window, and yet the fullback position remained generally unchanged.
Vitalii Mykolenko was the presumed starter at left back, while Adam Aznou was brought in as his understudy and the hopeful long term answer at the position. At right back, however, the club opted to do nothing, instead choosing to continue the "square peg in a round hole" strategy with Jake O'Brien holding down the role.
Of course, the start to this season has seen both left backs suffer injuries, forcing midfielder (and right footed) James Garner into the left back position. And while he's performed as well as could be expected given the circumstances, Garner is not a left back in the same way that O'Brien isn't a fullback of any kind.
So it makes sense to see that Everton were sniffing around the free agent market to add depth at fullback. One name that has arisen in the last day is former Spurs defender Sergio Reguilón, who Everton supposedly looked into signing this summer.
Reguilón hasn't had the best run since joining Tottenham from Real Madrid in September 2020. His first two years with Spurs were solid, as he was an all-but-nailed-on starter at left back. But successive loans to Atlético Madrid in 2022/23, Manchester United the following year, and Brentford in 2023/24 saw him play just 2095 total minutes for all three clubs due to a series of injuries.
The Spanish international returned to London last season, but played in just six matches (2 starts) for a total of 317 minutes. That came down to falling out of favor with manager Ange Postecoglou more than anything else, and the 28-year-old is now a free agent.
He's still young enough that it isn't out of the question that Reguilón could be a useful player for Everton this season, especially if Mykolenko can't stay healthy and David Moyes can't quite trust his starting left back position to a teenager with limited match experience.
Other clubs, including Brighton, West Ham, and Nottingham Forest, were also rumored to have inquired about the player, but as of now, he's still available.
The major issue, of course, is that Reguilón doesn't solve the biggest problem: Everton still doesn't have a legitimate right back. So while it would be reasonable to bring him in to fortify the left back position, most Everton supporters would agree that it would be the lesser desired fullback transaction.
