Harvey Elliott has taken only two appearances to find the net after leaving Liverpool. The midfielder completed a deadline day switch to Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season and the Premier League club have signed off on an obligation to complete his £35 million purchase next summer.
Elliott came back after the international break to make his debut for his new club as a substitute coming on against Everton in the Premier League last weekend. A second outing quickly followed on Tuesday night as Villa faced Brentford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
The former Liverpool starlet made his mark with a well-taken goal on the stroke of half-time. John McGinn won the ball back from an opposition defender, allowing his new teammate to run onto the loose ball and squeeze a shot below Hakon Rafn Valdimarsson.
Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, his new team were unable to hold onto their lead and went on to lose the penalty shoot-out at the end of the 90 minutes. Another ex-Red, Fabio Carvalho, was amonge those to net for the Bees.
So as delighted as Elliott could be, he took to Instagram and wrote: "Glad to get off the mark last night but unfortunate to go out. Go again Sunday [prayer emoji]."
Of his former Reds colleagues, Tyler Morton was the most supportive. The midfielder, who also left Anfield this summer for Lyon, replied: "What a guy."
He was among several to also like the social media post, including existing Liverpool stars Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Kaide Gordon, Rio Ngumoha, Ryan Gravenberch, Trey Nyoni, Virgil van Dijk, Vitezslav Jaros, and Wataru Endo.
There were also profiles belonging to other former Reds among the 50,000 who have liked the post, all who have left in recent years. They are Caoimhin Kelleher, Luis Diaz, Naby Keita, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
For Villa, it seems Elliott's arrival has come at the right time. Although they were eliminated from the cup, that was their first goal in competitive action in the 2025/26 campaign so far.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will be keeping a close track of the Englishman's progress because they could still stand to benefit in future.
As part of the transfer agreement completed on deadline day, the ECHO reported there to be both a sell-on clause and a buy-back clause.
This means they could stand to make even more money from the player years down the line, provided someone else comes in and buys him, or alternatively were Liverpool to end up seriously impressed by his development they could spark an easy attempt to bring him back to Anfield.
