Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was in action for Olympique Marseille against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has come under fire for his performance for Olympique Marseille in their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. The former United player set up the opening goal of the game, reacting quickest to rob the ball in a dangerous area, teeing up Timothy Weah to put Marseille a goal to the good after just 22 minutes.
Xabi Alonso's side would equalise from the penalty spot just six minutes later through Kylian Mbappe, before another spot kick in the 81st minute from the French forward ensured Madrid would get off to a winning start.
However, despite showing good tenacity to set up Marseille's opening goal, the French media have criticised his display overall. Manchester Evening News has taken a look at reaction from the media below.
'What does he do?'
Speaking on RMC, as relayed by Le10Sport, journalist Daniel Riolo claims some players were far from their best, name-dropping Greenwood post-match.
Riolo said: "Greenwood, I wonder if he's not made like that. Strong against the weak and weak against the strong, there's a bit of that.
"A little intermittent, you don't know if he's really connected to the collective. What does he do in the collective? I don't know, it's weird."
Greenwood 'shines' in Marseille moment but isn't convincing
Sports.fr also touch on former French international Johan Micoud's disappointment in Greenwood, relaying: "Mason Greenwood's performance Tuesday night in the Champions League match against Real Marseille disappointed Johan Micoud. For their return to the Champions League after a two-year absence, Olympique de Marseille were beaten by the narrowest of margins Tuesday night at Real Madrid (2-1).
"In addition to the controversy surrounding refereeing decisions, some Marseille players disappointed observers, particularly in the attacking line.
"Starting alongside Timothy Weah to support Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mason Greenwood was able to shine throughout the match, notably in Marseille's goal and the ball offered to Weah for the opening goal (22nd minute).
"But the former Manchester United player's overall performance clearly didn't completely convince Johan Micoud."
