£9.5m player sends emotional message after finally receiving his Newcastle United medal

Miguel Almiron was not part of the Carabao Cup final, but certainly helped Newcastle United end their trophy drought.

Toon fans will never forget 16th March 2025. That was the day Eddie Howe’s side beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley, ending their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup, with a trio of players lifting the trophy. Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles hurled the cup high in the air, as they became the team that finally ended Newcastle’s agonising trophy drought.

However, the Magpies’ Carabao Cup triumph was not just about Wembley. It was also about the route to the final, which included Miguel Almiron.

Miguel Almiron is ‘grateful’ after finally receiving Carabao Cup medal

By the time the Carabao Cup final arrived, Almiron was no longer a Newcastle United player. He had left the club in January, returning to Atlanta United for a fee of £9.5million.

But the Paraguayan had featured in the competition for Eddie Howe, making four appearances.

His most important moment came in the third round, winning the match-winning penalty that gave Newcastle United victory over Wimbledon.

“Grateful to have received this medal – it brings back so many great memories,” he wrote.

“Thank you to Newcastle United, the staff, my former teammates, and of course, the amazing fans.

“Your support has always meant so much to me. You’ll always have a special place in my heart – and I’ll always be supporting you.”

When is the 2026 Carabao Cup final?

Newcastle United are preparing to start defending their crown, as they get set to begin their next Carabao Cup campaign.

Eddie Howe’s side are in third round action on 24th September, as they face League One side Bradford City at St James’ Park.

The goal will be to return to Wembley in 2026, with this season’s Carabao Cup final set to take place on 22nd March. It is one week later than the 2025 final.

Whether Newcastle are involved will likely depend on how they cope with the demands of European football. They are back in the Champions League, which means the Newcastle United squad is going to be extremely stretched.

But Howe will be keen to compete on all fronts, and certainly will not want to relinquish the Carabao Cup so soon after winning it.
