Buccaneers Receive Big Baker Mayfield Injury Update for Jets Game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield achieved an impressive comeback win, which also involved getting banged up throughout the Week 2 game.

The former No. 1 pick threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-38 completed passes. However, he also took four sacks during the matchup, which adds to the wear and tear early in the season.

One highlight clip from Monday's game featured Mayfield getting sacked in the second quarter, with some concern over his left leg. Although he was slower to get up, he kept playing through whatever happened to lead his team to victory.

Mayfield has been relatively healthy during his NFL career, which began in 2018 with the Cleveland Browns, before stints with the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams.

There have been injury concerns during his career, including worry over a potential torn labrum injury four years ago in Cleveland.

Several days after the Buccaneers' win, NFL insider Ian Rapport shared an encouraging update regarding Mayfield.

Rapoport reported that Mayfield's injuries "did not require any MRIs or additional scans."

While he indicated the Bucs' QB might take some time off this week to recover, it seems he should be good to go in Week 3.

That's encouraging news for a Tampa Bay team that has started hot at 2-0 for its second consecutive season. Before the team's 20-19 victory over the Texans, the Bucs defeated the Atlanta Falcons for a 23-20 season-opening win.

Mayfield became the Bucs' starting QB in 2023. The Bucs signed him to a contract following NFL legend Tom Brady's retirement after two seasons with Tampa Bay, including a Super Bowl win.

The 2025 Bucs' first two games were away, with their Week 3 matchup against the New York Jets serving as their home opener. As of this report, Mayfield and the Bucs are favored to win by 6.5 points over their opponents.

Currently, Teddy Bridgewater is on the depth chart as Mayfield's backup if Mayfield can't play on Sunday. Based on Rapoport's report, that would be a surprise, though.
