Bruno Guimaraes implies one Arsenal player simply ran the show against Bilbao in Champions League masterclass

The Champions League is back, and for Arsenal, it didn’t quite come back with a bang but with three points nonetheless.

Mikel Arteta took his team to Spain, where they faced Athletic Club in a hostile atmosphere at San Mames.

There was a quick start for the home side, but the Gunners held typically firm at the back, denying many opportunities.

Arsenal then grew into the match, taking control, before striking in the final 20 minutes, thanks to two substitutes in Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

With three points in the bag heading back to London, there were plenty of positive performances, including one from a star who got some attention from Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes.

Bruno Guimaraes suggests Gabriel Martinelli ran the show as Arsenal beat Athletic Club

Gabriel Martinelli’s impact on Arsenal cannot be overlooked, as he changed the dynamic of the match in midweek.

The Brazilian’s well-taken goal opened things up, as his pace and clinical edge helped the Gunners towards a valuable three points in the Champions League’s league phase.

He took to social media with a message of support, stating: “Kicking off the new campaign with a win!! Thank you for the support.”

The comments were filled with praise for the forward’s display, including some words from a compatriot of his, Bruno Guimaraes.

The Newcastle star simply said: “Martishow,” implying that Martinelli ran the show in Arsenal’s win against Athletic Club.

It’s a moment that the 24-year-old needed, following his tough start to the campaign, along with Arsenal signing Eberechi Eze in his position.

Now, there is something of a headache for Arteta to contend with, ahead of the next match.

Is Mikel Arteta actually using Gabriel Martinelli out of position at Arsenal

Arsenal fans have noted Martinelli’s struggles over recent seasons, as the star hasn’t quite managed to hit the heights that were expected of him.

Some of that could be down to the dysfunctional left side compared to the right, as there are plenty of options who drift on the right but not on the left, often leaving the Brazilian isolated.

Martinelli’s main strengths involve his pace and his finishing ability, something that isn’t always brought out when placed on the left.

Perhaps, as a result, he is playing in the wrong position.

The run and finish from Martinelli was closer to that of a last-line striker, though Thierry Henry slammed Viktor Gyokeres for missing a similar opportunity.

That could mean there is a future for him there, rather than on the wing, especially with the strength in depth now available in the frontline.
