Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has cast doubt on Arsenal’s decision to sign Viktor Gyokeres, suggesting the Swedish forward is “definitely not a skilful player” and warning he could face a difficult adaptation period at the Emirates.

Gyokeres joined the Gunners from Sporting Lisbon in a £55 million deal, potentially rising to £63.5m with add-ons, after scoring a prolific 97 goals in 102 appearances in Portugal. Since arriving in north London, the 27-year-old has registered three goals in his first four Premier League games but has already divided opinion with inconsistent performances, struggling on his debut against Manchester United before scoring twice in a win over Leeds United.

Speaking to Flashscore, Saha admitted he was surprised by Mikel Arteta’s choice of striker. “You can see that Arsenal have not played as good football as we know them, that’s probably the way Mikel Arteta wants to play,” Saha said.

“Gyokeres is the solution for that. So I do think the fans may look at things differently. They still have wingers who don’t cross the ball as much, so I’m a bit surprised.”

While acknowledging Gyokeres’ finishing ability, Saha suggested his style differs from what Arsenal supporters have grown used to.

“Arsenal [previously] went to Gabriel Jesus, who was able to create his own chances a bit, then they almost played with no striker,” he explained. “Now they have Mikel Merino, who is similar to Kai Havertz. But Gyokeres is definitely a striker who can score goals. For him, it will take time to settle at Arsenal.”

Saha likened the Swede’s situation to Olivier Giroud’s early struggles to win over Arsenal fans following Thierry Henry’s departure.

“I can see where a player like Olivier Giroud had a lot of trouble convincing a lot of fans because he was going after Thierry Henry,” Saha said on The Athletic FC podcast. “Settling for a player who has done really well in Portugal, but doesn’t have the attributes Arsenal fans are used to, it’s going to be a big pressure for him.”

Arteta described Gyokeres’ signing as a statement of intent in July, praising his “winning mentality.” The forward’s goal in Arsenal’s recent 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest offered a glimpse of his value, adding directness to the Gunners’ attack. Still, critics such as Alan Pardew have echoed Saha’s reservations, pointing to his struggles in the defeat to Liverpool.

Saha went further by claiming Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko would have been a better option for Arsenal. “I think Sesko is a better player in terms of style and potential impact,” he added.
