Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided several injury updates Wednesday as the team began preparations for a Week 2 NFL road matchup with the New York Giants.
Defensive end Mike Danna (hip) and cornerback Kristian Fulton (ankle) will not practice Wednesday after suffering injuries in the loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. On a positive note, second-year receiver Xavier Worthy is progressing and rookie receiver Jalen Royals will return to practice.
Worthy was back at practice Thursday of last week after suffering a shoulder injury in the team’s opening game against the Los Angeles Chargers. After two limited practices, the Chiefs designated Worthy as doubtful for this past weekend’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, later ruling him out entirely.
Worthy lasted just three plays in Week 1 after inadvertently colliding with teammate Travis Kelce on a crossing route. Initially, the injury outlook seemed concerning, but the club has maintained Worthy will not undergo surgery and should avoid a stint on the Reserve/Injured list.
Wednesday marks Royals’ first practice since late August, when he was diagnosed with knee tendinitis. He was not active for either of the Chiefs’ first two games.
“He’s coming (along) pretty good,” Reid said of Royals. “We’ll see how he does here. He’s been out for a while.”
Considering the suspension to receiver Rashee Rice, the participation of Worthy and Royals are welcome signs, especially as Kansas City hopes to avoid a three-game losing streak to start the 2025 season.
Reid added that neither Worthy nor Royals would have any limitations at practice, a point that would be confirmed in the official injury report, which was due to be released at some point later Wednesday afternoon.
The Chiefs travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey, to battle the Giants in Week 2’s edition of Sunday Night Football. Like Kansas City, New York is 0-2, having dropped its opening games to the Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys.
