‘I want to stay’ – Andreas Christensen discusses Barcelona future ahead of Champions League tie …

Andreas Christensen made his desire to stay at Barcelona beyond this season very clear when he spoke in a press conference on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s Champions League debut against Newcastle.

Christensen, whose contract expires next summer, hasn’t yet been offered a new deal but is determined to prove the injury issues that plagued him last season are a thing of the past, and he is betting on himself to show the club through his play this season that he deserves a new contract.

> ”I made it clear to the club in the summer that I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to come back fit. Last year was difficult for me. I came back a little early in preseason to be ready. I hope to stay. I think it depends on my performance. I want to stay here; that’s the plan I have.

> “I feel very good right now. Last season there was a lot of overload. I feel good, and the physios are working well with me. They’re taking great care of us. Returning to the team in good shape is good for me, and I’m ready to work and fight.”

I love Christensen’s attitude. He knows his injury history and why that would cause Barça to be hesitant about extending his contract, so he knows it’s up to him to show he can be healthy and play at the highest level to remain a _Blaugrana_ for years to come.

The Christensen from Xavi’s first season was an incredible defender, and he has shown that that player is still there whenever he’s been fit. Staying healthy is the obvious challenge, but the Dane is ready to prove he can be available and play great football.
