Graham Potter is a man under pressure but have West Ham missed out on a blockbuster replacement?

Since failing to renew David Moyes’ contract, West Ham have lacked the sort of stability that the veteran Scot takes with him to any club.

The football might not have been pretty at times, however, if the owners had that decision again, Everton might well have been playing their first season at their new stadium in the Championship.

After appointing Graham Potter last year, the former Chelsea boss is under even more pressure with reports that the Irons are considering a change. Nuno Espirito Santo’s is reported to be on a shortlist and his availability might persuade them to bite the bullet, however, it looks like they have missed the boat on what would have been a blockbuster appointment.

Jose Mourinho would take West Ham job

The highest profile free agent manager is the “Special One” with Jose Mourinho already having been tipped to replace Potter by former Man Utd and West Ham scout Mick Brown last week.

“Jose Mourinho will want the West Ham job,” he told Football Insider. “He wants to return to London, I know he’s still got a house there and he loves living in the city, so if a job comes up that will allow him to move back, of course he’ll be interested.

“Looking at the London clubs, he doesn’t exactly have a million options. Chelsea, no, Tottenham, no, Arsenal, no. West Ham, yeah, possibly. Fulham and Palace maybe. I think West Ham are the standout club on that list and it’s something that might come up. I don’t believe Potter will be sacked right now, but they’ve got to be prepared and have possible candidates lined up to replace him if they do make that decision.

“I have to say, that 3-0 win against Forest was something I didn’t see coming, so that will have bought him a bit more time. But like I say, West Ham will be aware that at some stage, they might have to look for a new manager if things go back to the way they started the season. There will be a few candidates for that job, I’m sure, and Mourinho will want to be among them.”

Mourinho could have agreed terms on a new job already

Manager who 'would want West Ham job' reaches 'agreement in principle' with Champions League club

Unfortunately for those who might have wanted to see Mourinho return to the Premier League and bring a bit of star quality back to the London Stadium, Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Portuguese legend could be about to return to his homeland: “Benfica are in advanced talks with José Mourinho after Bruno Lage got sacked overnight! Understand Mourinho has opened doors to Benfica move as he wants to return to coaching immediately. The agreement could be sealed soon.”

Benfica boss Lage lost his job after seeing his team lose 3-2 to Qarabag at home after being 2-0 up after a little over 15 minutes. Incredibly, their league form hasn’t exactly been bad with three wins and a draw, however, with Mourinho available, they have moved quickly to land a manager with a proven track record of success in a number of countries at home and on the continent.

The sort of action that could see West Ham with a difficult decision to make if the candidates at the top of the short list become unavailable.
