Leeds United learned a big lesson this season in their second league game. The 5-0 loss to Arsenal was a big eye-opening experience for the team and the fans on the day.
For the first 30 minutes, it looked like the game was in the balance. Leeds kept Arsenal out and limited them to long shots and half chances; the Whites even threatened from one corner kick. Jurrien Timber scored from a well-worked set piece routine after 34 minutes. Then the floodgates opened as the Gunners scored four more goals, including another from a corner kick.

That game showed the importance of set-pieces in the Premier League. A few weeks ago, the YEP reported that the club were looking to hire a set-piece coach for Daniel Farke. Former Leeds man Stuart Dallas has been speaking on the importance of set pieces in the top flight:
“Set pieces are massive. I think we’ve seen Arsenal last year, Aston Villa, the amount of goals, and that can be the difference in 10-15 points per season.” he said on the Square Ball podcast.
“I think this season is going to be difficult; we’re gonna have to grind out results, but I don’t see any reason why we can’t do that. I think, especially at home, we’re going to be hard to beat.”
Last season, Leeds scored 13 from set-piece situations. If they can replicate close to that, they can easily add a few more goals and wins as the season progress.
Stuart Dallas speaks on club’s survival chance
Dallas also had a conversation about if Leeds could survive the Premier League season.
“I truly believe that we’re staying up. I think the team look good. As I said, the structure of the team is good. It’s about creating momentum and confidence.
“We can go next week to Wolves and win. You wouldn’t believe how much confidence that will give the team going forward, but I think we stay up. I think we stay up comfortably.”
The Whites have four points from four games, and are away to Wolves next.
