Inter Milan plot raid on Manchester City for 32-year-old veteran to replace key star

Inter Milan are considering a move for Stefan Ortega as an immediate replacement for veteran keeper Yann Sommer, with a January approach possible.

According to Inter Live, Stefan Ortega is being considered as a key option by Inter Milan as they are looking to replace Yann Sommer at the earliest. The veteran Swiss stopper has shown holes in his game that could prove costly in the context of the campaign, as the Nerazzurri could consider a swift move for the 32-year-old keeper from Manchester City.

Manchester City decided to overhaul their goalkeeping ranks during the summer, which has left Stefan Ortega in a tough situation. The German goalkeeper is into the final year of his deal at the Etihad, as he was widely expected to depart during the close season.

Ortega was told to find a new club; there were a few showing interest. Incidentally, Manchester City first signed James Trafford from Burnley, which appeared to be a signing that would allow one of Ortega or Ederson to depart. However, their decision to bring Gianluigi Donnarumma later in the window has rendered the others, including Trafford, alternative choices, as Ederson departed the club.

Manchester City are already contemplating a loan departure for Trafford to help him gain experience in January. Should that happen, the club might angle for a stay for Ortega at least until the end of the season when his contract expires.

However, the 32-year-old veteran is expected to have suitors ahead of the winter window, and should Manchester City decide to keep him as a second-fiddle to Donnarumma, it would all but end his slim hopes of making the Germany squad for the World Cup. Ortega also had Trabzonspor interested late in the summer, but they ended up signing Andre Onana from Manchester United.

Inter Milan eyeing Stefan Ortega as Yann Sommer replacement

Inter Milan are now angling for a move for Ortega in the January window as a replacement for the ineffective Yann Sommer. The latter has been criticised for his performances in the opening games of the campaign, which have cost the Nerazzurri points, as the club could look at the market for financially viable solutions.

Ortega’s contract expires next summer, which does make him a viable target from a financial standpoint. Inter Milan could potentially test the waters with a low offer, and there’s a big chance to convince the 32-year-old veteran to make the switch, especially if they view him as a first-choice stopper.
