Report: Transfer for former Wrexham and Sunderland player now quashed in fresh update

A former Wrexham player has been linked with a transfer this week but it is reportedly not on the cards.

After their promotion from League One, Wrexham released eight players at the end of their contracts in June 2025.

Among those was former Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Steven Fletcher.

The ageing forward had a prolific 2024/25, finishing as the Dragons’ top-scoring centre-forward.

However, it was made clear by the player in a social media message confirming his release that Fletcher left Wrexham ‘not by choice’.

Following his exit, the Scotsman has remained without a club but he was linked with a potential return to action this week.

Transfer for former Sunderland and Wrexham star Steven Fletcher not happening

It has been reported that Fletcher has held talks with Hibernian about a potential return to the Scottish side.

The number nine began his senior career on their books, scoring 52 in 189 games before eventually leaving for Burnley.

However, it does not look as though Fletcher will be returning to his boyhood club.

The Scottish Sun are now reporting that the former Wrexham man is not expected to make a return to Easter Road.

It’s said that while Hibs look keen to add another big man to their attack, Fletcher appears to be out of reach.

Will Steven Fletcher retire after leaving Wrexham

Wrexham have lost two physical strikers this summer in Fletcher and Ollie Palmer.

It leaves Kieffer Moore as the only natural ‘big man’ for Parkinson to select.

Axing the former Sunderland striker made some sense given his age, but he was also very prolific, and though he could not start games in League One, he was always a threat off the bench.

After leaving Wrexham, Fletcher has suggested he’s ready to retire, saying only something special could bring him back.

A return to a former club could have ticked that box, but if a move to Hibs is off, his career, as he’s already hinted, may well be done.
