Eagles Champ Jalen Mills Finally Joins NFL Roster in Week 3

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Jalen Mills, who won a championship in the City of Brotherly Love in 2017, didn’t get much interest on the open market this offseason after playing last season with the New York Jets.

Mills eventually got a call from the Houston Texans, who signed him on Aug. 10 [as extra safety depth](https://section215.com/former-eagles-defender-signs-new-team-training-camp-injury-ex-philly-starter-01k2a3fngzj9) for the preseason. But the ex-Eagle didn’t make the final 53-man roster and was cut at the end of preseason.

Since then, things have been quiet for Mills until Tuesday, when the Texans reportedly re-signed him to their practice squad, [per Aaron Wilson of _KRPC-2_](https://x.com/AaronWilson_NFL/status/1968035483885375902).

Ex-Eagle Jalen Mills Rejoins Houston Texans After Preseason Release

-------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a tremendous opportunity for the former Eagles defensive back, who is already familiar with Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and the defensive coaching staff. However, Houston wasn’t the only team interested in Mills.

The veteran safety also reportedly worked out for the Jets, per Wilson. The ex-Eagle still has another step to go to get on a gameday roster. However, with Mills on the Texans’ taxi squad now, he can be called up at least three times to the active roster for gamedays.

If the Texans wanted to promote him a fourth time, they would have to sign the former Eagle to the 53-man roster. As things currently stand, Houston doesn’t have an abundance of safety depth on its 53-man roster behind C.J. Gardner-Johnson (starter), Calen Bullock (starter), and M.J. Stewart.

If any of those players were to get hurt, the Texans would need someone to step in right away with starting experience, hence Mills. The ex-Eagle has spent the last year playing safety, but he made a name for himself in Philadelphia for his cornerback skills. The "Green Goblin," which was his nickname during his time with the Eagles due to his green hair, wasn’t the fastest guy on the outside, but he always competed hard.

Mills was instrumental in the Eagles winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history in 2017, as he started in 15 games.

Since that Super Bowl championship, Mills has found a way to stay on an NFL roster by being available and doing whatever the team asks him, whether as a starter or backup in Philadelphia, New England, or New York.
