Fury as VAR fails to intervene in controversial Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid moment

Liverpool lost a two-goal lead against Atletico Madrid in controversial circumstances during their Champions League opener.

The Reds scored two early goals via Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah but were pegged back shortly before half-time in the 3-2 win.

Marcos Llorente poked the ball into the bottom corner in added time with his third Champions League goal for Atletico at Anfield.

Replays appeared to show Antoine Griezmann standing in an offside position beforehand.

Although he didn't touch the ball, he was in the eyeline of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson as the shot was taken.

However, the goal was allowed to stand and made the scoreline 2-1, but it drew criticism for perceived interference.

"Well you can understand why Alisson was immediately out speaking to the referee," Jim Proudfoot said on commentary for talkSPORT.

"The goal does stand. Griezmann was in an offside position deemed not to be interfering with play.

"But when Alisson tells you that it is what he was in his line of vision… He's got a case."

Dean Ashton added: "Well he was. He was!

"He's had to look round Griezmann to see where that ball is and he hasn't reacted very quickly probably because of it."

Renowned journalist Henry Winter took to X and showed his bemusement with the goal being allowed.

"Antoine Griezmann couldn’t have blocked Alisson’s vision more if he’d brought a sightscreen along.

"How on earth was that Atletico goal given? Griezmann has to be interfering. VAR having a mixed half."

Robertson found the back of the net with a deflected effort from a Salah free-kick on four minutes.

Salah then got onto the scoresheet himself moments later with a low finish in a blistering start to their Champions League campaign.

Llorente's Anfield love affair

But Llorente ensured Atletico went into half-time with belief of making up for their early errors and fighting back in the match.

Llorente is a man who loves scoring at Anfield and added a second to his tally, via a huge deflection off Alexis Mac Allister.

He has seven Champions League goals and four of them have come against Liverpool.
