The Los Angeles Rams have held their first two opponents of the 2025 NFL season to both under 20 points, held both quarterbacks to under 200 passing yards and have only allowed one touchdown so far.
The good start on defense is being led by second-year defensive coordinator Chris Shula, who has helped the Rams keep opposing offenses to an average of 16.5 points per game so far.
ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler dropped some notes about the Rams coordinator, mentioning that Shula’s time in LA could come to an end, but in a positive way for the coach. Fowler mentioned that the DC is getting some harder looks from around the league for head coaching jobs.
“While the coaching carousel won’t spin for another three-plus months, some are making early cases to get on the ride. A group of up-and-coming defensive coordinators could get harder looks from teams filling head coaching roles,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said. “Jeff Hafley (Packers), Chris Shula (Rams) and Jesse Minter (Chargers) were not heavily featured in this past cycle, but don’t be shocked if that changes.”
“All three coaches have their defenses in the top five in total scoring through two weeks… Shula is on the NFL league offices’ radar as a prime candidate.”
Shula was an internal hire for the defensive coordinator spot for the Rams. Shula has been with the organization since 2017 as an assistant linebackers coach and has climbed all the way up to become DC, replacing Raheem Morris, who left to become a head coach with the Atlanta Falcons. Now, it may be time for Shula to say goodbye.

There are a few teams whose head coaches are in the hot seat after two weeks of the 2025 NFL season.
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniels is one of those coaches whose job is getting hotter by the week.
Sports Illustrated’s Brock Vierra named why Miami should at least consider the Rams’ defensive coordinator as an option after McDaniel. Here’s what he had to say:
“Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula will be an NFL head coach next season. Obviously, this isn’t what Rams fans want to hear…”
“Shula has the trust and respect of the locker room because they went through the growing pains together… He finds athletic talents for his secondary and their ability to be lined up all over the field masked perceived weaknesses, leading to a continued production of success… Not only would Shula be a perfect fit in Miami as a leader, tactician, and coach, he would be bringing the men with him who can create a winning culture.”
Other landing spots for Chris Shula could include the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans, with both teams off to a 0-2 start to the season.

If the Los Angeles Rams were to lose Chris Shula to a head coaching job, they would obviously have to replace him.
Shula himself was an internal hire for the defensive coordinator job and the Rams could do the same. Defensive line and run game coordinator Giff Smith could be the next man up. The Rams’ defensive line has been one of the best in recent years and the run game has seen Kyren Williams excel.
The Rams could also brace themselves for the possibility if Shula decides to remain another season as the DC of the team.
New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson was receiving job opportunities after two seasons, before deciding to remain another season.
Whatever the future holds for Los Angeles, the Rams should remain prepared.
