Three Leeds United questions Daniel Farke must answer ahead of crunch clash vs Wolves

Leeds United travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers in what already is a crucial match for both teams just five games into the Premier League season.

Leeds have yet to score away from home and have lost both trips on the road while Saturday’s hosts have failed to pick up a single point. They have scored one more goal than Leeds, who have not netted from open play after four matches.

Daniel Farke will sit down with the media this afternoon to address a number of pressing topics. One of them is his thoughts on the right wing situation having decided to play Brenden Aaronson there against Fulham.

It's worth underlining that Farke will not be giving any team selection hints away ahead of time, including on the right flank, aside from injury news. But the manager will be more giving on other matters.

How is Daniel James?

The winger went off with a whack to the side after coming on as a substitute in the second half at former loan club Fulham. He had not started the game after not being at 100% fitness following Wales duty in midweek.

Farke hoped that the issue was not serious and fans will be provided with an update today. Goalkeeper Lucas Perri is due to miss the game at Wolves with a quad issue, amid the hope he can return for the home clash with Bournemouth the following weekend.

Farke may well give an update on how well he is progressing plus whether Joel Piroe has recovered from his foot problem as expected. He will also outline any further issues that have emerged since the weekend.

Is Saturday a must win game?

This seems obvious to many fans but Farke may well take the stance that this is a must-not-lose game rather than a must-win. Of course, he is setting out to get three points from every match but recent outings have made clear that he will not risk the draw late on in search of a win.

The carrot is that a win would push Leeds some seven points ahead of suspected relegation rivals Wolves - a big gap so early on. United also need confidence in front of goal. But at the same time, the one thing that cannot happen is ceding ground to a bottom three rival.

Going four games without a victory would be notable and heap pressure on the next four games ahead of the torrid run from the start of November into mid-December. Suffering a third loss in four games would be extremely damaging for morale and Farke’s control of proceedings.

Why haven’t Leeds managed to score from open play?

Farke hinted at an answer to this when he pointed to the fact that Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor are not at 100% fitness levels just yet. That’s a fair point but that is not the complete picture.

United have lacked final-third bite in all four games so far and Farke has had no problem in underlining that lack of quality in offence. However, he hasn’t directly answered why he has not been able to squeeze out better attacking thrust tactically-speaking.

Many will see the lack of link to attack and the absence of creativity as answers but it will be interesting to hear Farke’s tactical take on the shortfall.

The boss named four players - Willy Gnonto, Aaronson, James and Jack Harrison - as players who have a point to prove in the Premier League. The fact is, so does he.
