Cole Palmer on Bayern Munich defeat: We deserved more

Cole Palmer felt that Chelsea deserved more following a tough 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich during our UEFA Champions League curtain-raiser.

It was always going to be a difficult contest at the Allianz Arena, but the Blues rose to the challenge, coming out of the gates well, but despite the positive start, Bayern notched two goals to set us back.

On his 100th appearance for Chelsea, Cole hit back with an impressive strike into the top left-hand corner to give the travelling supporters a glimmer of hope heading into the break.

However, the home side maintained their dominance, and after a third Bayern goal, Palmer found the back of the net again, but it was ruled out for offside. As such, Cole was left feeling that we were owed more for our performance in a fierce atmosphere.

‘I feel like we deserved more, to be honest,’ Cole opened, speaking after the match.

‘We started well and I think we had early chances to score, but when you make mistakes at the highest level, then it’s hard to come back into the game.

‘There was a bit of a lack of concentration and not managing the moments correctly, but I feel like we showed we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. I think we deserved more.’

Our No10 believes that we showed we can compete with some of the biggest sides in this competition, inspired by the words of his head coach, [Enzo Maresca](/en/teams/profile/enzo-maresca).

He continued: ‘The manager said to us before that he knows we can go toe-to-toe with anyone, and I think we showed that tonight despite the result.

‘It’s a good learning curve for tonight and to be back in the competition is nice so we just need to kick off from here.’

As we look ahead to the rest of the competition, the 23-year-old explained that we’re not in the Champions League to make up the numbers.

Cole added: ‘We’re not in this competition for it to be a learning curve. I feel like we showed tonight that we can compete and we want to do as best as we can.’
