'Started': Matt Hobbs has begun working in new role, three months after leaving Wolves -…

At the start of the summer, Wolves fans were left surprised when news came through of Matt Hobbs’ departure from the club.

Johnny Phillips had suggested Hobbs was likely to leave the club, with Wolves restructuring their recruitment division.

The sporting director role was dissolved, but Hobbs was offered the chance to stay at Wolves.

He chose to move on, and not long after, Domenico Teti came in, taking up the role of director of professional football.

Teti now works closely with Pereira on transfers, and with agent Jorge Mendes and his associate Valdir Cardoso, with Matt Jackson also involved as the club’s director of player recruitment and development.

The restructure prompted Hobbs’ exit, but he’s now started his next job.

Feelings were mixed about Hobbs when he left Wolves.

Some fans admired the work he did, praising his work in getting the likes of Matheus Cunha and Joao Gomes to the club.

He also brought in big fees for the likes of Maximilian Kilman and Pedro Neto.

However, some felt his faith in Gary O’Neil was a little too unwavering. He was the man who brought him to Wolves and gave him a new contract ahead of last season.

The good things Hobbs did have convinced Crystal Palace to turn to him, with journalist Alex Crook now reporting he’s actually started work at Selhurst Park.

He said: “Matt Hobbs has now started work as #CPFC sporting director.

“Left Wolves in the summer after 10 years after overseeing the signings of the likes of João Gomes, Andre and Matheus Cunha. Also helped ensure Cunha stayed in January and sold Max Kilman and Pedro Neto for big money.”

There is not yet official confirmation of the appointment from Palace.

Hobbs deserved role at another Premier League club

Hobbs did have his critics at Wolves for some of the decisions he signed off on.

He arguably made more good ones than bad ones, and the work he did shortly after becoming sporting director in November 2022 was crucial in helping Wolves to stay up that season.

His strong backing of O’Neil was not something that benefitted Wolves in the end.

Generally speaking, he was a good servant to Wolves across his 10 years at the club in multiple roles.

Arguably, he did enough to warrant a role at another Premier League club, and it will now be interesting to see what he does for Palace.
