Heading into Gameweek 5, we’ve crunched the Opta data to uncover five Fantasy Premier League gems currently owned by fewer than 10% of managers despite their potential for strong fantasy output.
GK – Robin Roefs | 4.5m | 1.8% Ownership
We’re as surprised as you are to be recommending a goalkeeper from a club who last year finished 24 points behind the winners of the Championship, but the numbers suggest Sunderland’s bright start may have legs.
Robin Roefs picked up eight points from last week’s clean sheet away to Crystal Palace and now sits behind only Guglielmo Vicario (29 points) among all goalkeepers on Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for total points accrued.
The underlying data indicates that there is no reason for Sunderland’s bubble to burst anytime soon – they rank fifth in the Premier League for non-penalty expected goals (xG) faced, while further xG research tells us that Roefs has himself prevented the fourth-most goals of any goalkeeper this season thanks to his shot-saving abilities.
Robin Roefs total xG prevented - Sunderland
Sunderland’s next four fixtures come against teams who have scored a combined 10 goals from 16 games so far this season, with an entirely scoreless Aston Villa up next at the Stadium of Light.
DEF – Marcos Senesi | 4.6m | 9.1% Ownership
We are going to keep banging the defensive contribution (DefCon) drum in this column, and one player who appears to have mastered the artform is Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi.
As a small reminder – defenders pick up two additional points for reaching 10+ blocks, clearances, tackles and interceptions combined in a single game. Midfielders and forwards need to meet a threshold of 12, with recoveries also included.
Senesi is one of two players, along with James Tarkowski, to have returned DefCon points in all four games so far this season, while he leads all defenders for total DefCons with 55.
If Senesi were to pull in DefCon points in 75% of his appearances this season, this would see him return an additional 56 points. That would be the same as scoring 14 goals as a forward on FPL, or 11 goals as a midfielder.
Bournemouth’s next two games are against Newcastle and Leeds – someone is going to have to beat Nick Woltemade and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to those headers…
MID – Yeremy Pino | 6.0m | 0.2% Ownership
Yeremy Pino’s stocks were very high a few seasons ago when he broke through at Villarreal, with the midfielder linked regularly to the best teams in Europe.
As of 2023 he had begun to establish himself within the Spanish national side, starting consecutive games against Italy and Croatia that summer at the age of 20.
Unfortunately, just as his career was truly taking off, Pino tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee in a match against Atlético Madrid in November of that year, and he missed nine months of football as a result.
He bounced back to life last campaign and though the Champions League-level clubs that were linked in the past perhaps felt like it was a season too soon for them to acquire his services, Crystal Palace jumped at the opportunity when losing Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
Pino hasn’t shied away from the pressure, taking Eze’s number 10 shirt while looking electrifying on debut from the bench against Aston Villa, before doing everything apart from putting the ball in the back of the net last week against Sunderland.
Yeremy Pino Touches vs Sunderland
Able to play on both wings or behind the striker, Pino will not be short of minutes, and you can expect him to cause a struggling West Ham all sorts of problems this weekend.
MID – Kevin | 6.0m | 0.1% Ownership
We need to talk about Kevin.
From Kyle’s and Kilbane’s to De Bruyne’s and Danso’s, we’ve been blessed with plenty of Kevin’s in the Premier League, 48 to be exact, but none so special as to be named only once.
Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk on the final day of the transfer window for a club-record £35 million, Kevin lit up the field on his Fulham debut last weekend in a 15-minute cameo against Leeds, with a superb save from Karl Darlow denying him a dream start to his Premier League career.
The Brazilian already has some minutes in his legs this season having started four qualifying matches across the Europa League and Conference League for Shakhtar, scoring five goals while providing two assists in those outings.
Fulham manager Marco Silva was full of praise for Kevin after the Leeds game, and given his side have struggled in attack so far this season, it would not be at all surprising to see him handed a full debut against Brentford this weekend. Fulham fans certainly hope so.
FWD – Nick Woltemade | 7.0m | 2.5% Ownership
Nick Woltemade made a scoring start to his Newcastle career last week, instantly repaying much of the faith shown in him by the club’s hierarchy, which was a great deal given the £65 million expenditure required to bring him to Tyneside.
After the man writing these words spent a week trying to convince anyone who cared that Woltemade wasn’t simply a target man just because he was 6-foot-6, the German matched his headed goal tally from tally season with a beautiful back-post bullet that suggested Newcastle may well use him in that manner nonetheless.
Deeper Analysis:
Yoane Wissa’s continued absence through injury means Woltemade should start every game for the foreseeable future, and other than the visit of Arsenal in Gameweek 6, Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures should give him ample opportunity to keep scoring.
Given his delicate touch and strong link-up play, don’t be surprised to see Woltemade chip in with assists too, with the prospect of producing one-on-one situations for ultra-fast wingers Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga a realistic one.
