Player explains ‘deciding factor’ over snubbing summer move to West Ham

West Ham United showed interest in Michael Zetterer before he left Werder Bremen for Eintracht Frankfurt on August 20th.

Two months ago, we covered claims from Germany that West Ham were keen on signing the goalkeeper in the summer window.

On August 6th, Sky Deutschland reported West Ham made a bid for the 30-year-old, who was put up for sale by Werder Bremen. They also stated he was willing to make a switch to the Premier League, but that didn’t happen.

Zetterer has started in all four games for his new club, is yet to keep a clean sheet and has conceded six goals. Bild have spoken to the stopper and discussed West Ham’s interest.

According to their information, the German could have joined Graham Potter’s side, and Bild specifically asked him why he ended up at Eintracht Frankfurt instead of the Premier League club.

He says the contract offered [until 2029] by Eintracht Frankfurt was key for him to pick them over West Ham.

“I wanted to stay in Germany, and I really value the Bundesliga. And with a club like Eintracht Frankfurt, I didn’t have to think long,” he said.

“The ambitious goals appealed to me. I immediately had a good gut feeling, which only improved through discussions with the coaches and management. Of course, a long-term contract [until 2029] was also a deciding factor.”

West Ham ended up signing Mads Hermansen from Leicester City in the summer and his performances haven’t been impressive so far. Therefore, the Hammers decided to offer a contract to Łukasz Fabiański, months after releasing him at the end of last season.
