Liverpool injury news and expected return dates ahead of Everton game

Liverpool kicked off its Champions League campaign in style on Wednesday with a 3-2 triumph over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah found the back of the net within the first six minutes, but Marcos Llorente - who famously bagged a brace at Anfield for Atletico in 2020 - nudged the visitors back into contention during first-half stoppage time.

His deflected strike looked to have secured a draw nine minutes from the final whistle. However, Virgil van Dijk's header in the second minute of added time clinched the victory for Liverpool, leading to Atletico manager Diego Simeone being sent off.

Alexander Isak finally made his debut for the Reds following his £125 million ($170.5 million) transfer deadline day switch from Newcastle earlier this month.

The Swedish international had only played 18 minutes since May, coming on for his national side in a 2-0 loss to Kosovo during the international break.

After ramping up his fitness training last week at the AXA Training Centre, he was included in Slot's starting line-up against Simeone's team.

In other news, Alexis Mac Allister, who gave Liverpool an injury fright after being taken off at half-time in the victory over Burnley, began on the bench. The Argentine international then came on for Cody Gakpo in the 58th minute.

Looking ahead to the Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime, only Curtis Jones is on the injury list. The 24-year-old missed the journey to Burnley after picking up a knock against Arsenal prior to the international break.

There's no set date for his comeback, but the injury is not thought to be severe, and there's optimism he could be back in action for the match against Everton.

"Curtis will train with the team and hopefully able to be in the squad on Saturday, but not for tomorrow (against Atletico)," Slot stated before Wednesday's game.

The Liverpool boss also spoke to TNT Sports after beating Atletico. "If you want to beat a team like Atletico, which has an unbelievable mentality, you have to beat them with their weapon as well," said Slot.

"That is what we showed again today - that we can beat them with mentality. I think we should've made it easier for ourselves.

"At 2-0 in the first half, we got more than a few chances to make a third. At 2-1 in the second half, we hit the post. We were so close a few times, and if the margin is only one goal, something can always happen, and it happened.

"But again we showed mentality because in that 10 minutes that still had to be played, we were pushing, pushing, pushing, and we scored a set-piece goal."
