Last month, Manchester City allowed Claudio Echeverri to join Bayer Leverkusen on a loan deal, and he’s played 35 minutes from two games for the German club so far.
The 19-year-old is eager to be part of the Argentina squad at the U20 World Cup that’ll take place in Chile between September 27th and October 19th.
Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has already insisted Echeverri is staying, and that Manchester City also want this, but the attacking midfielder wasn’t giving up.
Earlier this week, Olé reported the Manchester City owned player was trying to put pressure on the German club to change their decision so that he can be part of Diego Placente’s squad later this month.
A fresh report from Olé says Echeverri was ‘adamant’ about travelling to Chile and fought until Wednesday before he received ‘bad news’ from Bayern Leverkusen, who dashed his hopes by refusing to release him for the U20 World Cup.
Argentina U20 worked to find a solution with Bayer Leverkusen, but the latter stood firm, and it’s claimed the decision made by German club, along with Manchester City, ‘weighed more heavily in the battle’.
The newspaper points out Bayer Leverkusen have no obligation to release the player as the tournament isn’t part of the ‘FIFA senior calendar’.
