Leeds United will equal record set by Don Revie with victory in crucial Wolves clash

Leeds United will match a record set by legendary head coach Don Revie with a victory against Wolves in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke is still searching for a winning formula in attack in the Premier League, having watched his Leeds side go four games without a goal in open play.

Leeds have enjoyed some classic encounters against Wolves in recent years, including a dramatic Rodrigo Moreno-inspired win on their last visit to Molineux in 2023.

The 2023 victory was the high point of the ill-fated Javi Gracia reign at Elland Road, and also handed Leeds a third consecutive win over their rivals from the West Midlands.

If Leeds can claim a much-needed win on the road against Wolves, they will match an incredible 54-year-old record set during the glory days under Don Revie.

Leeds United targeting Don Revie record against Wolves

Daniel Farke has already matched several records set by the legendary former Leeds boss, Revie, as they stormed to promotion from the Championship.

Now, Farke has his eye on another piece of history that Revie made in 1971, by claiming a fourth consecutive league win over their next opponents.

Leeds’ current winning run stretches back to the beginning of the 2021/22 season under Jesse Marsch, when Luke Ayling scored a dramatic winner to claim a 3-2 win. This was followed by a 2-1 win at Elland Road at the beginning of the following year, before the win under Gracia.

Revie set his record with a fourth consecutive win over Wolves in February 1971, as Leeds finished second in the league and won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup in the 1970/71 season.

Paul Madeley, Allan Clarke and Johnny Giles scored the goals for Leeds that day to bounce back from an unexpected FA Cup defeat by fourth-division Colchester.

Luke Ayling goal proved crucial to survival in the 2021/22 season

The first goal of Leeds’ current three-game winning streak was a chaotic affair and proved crucial in the Whites’ hopes of staying in the top flight under Marsch.

Leeds had looked dead and buried in the first half after goals from Jonny Otto and Francisco Trincao gave the home side a 2-0 lead as the Whites lost three players to injury.

However, the game descended into chaos in the second half, after Raul Jimenez was dismissed for a foul on Illan Meslier, who was replaced by rookie goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaessonn, as the Whites mounted a famous comeback.

Jack Harrison started the comeback, firing home after an Ayling shot hit the post. After Dan James also hit the woodwork, Rodrigo pulled Leeds level before Ayling sent the travelling fans into raptures with his late winner.

Farke would be thrilled to see his side score three on the road this weekend, although he would surely prefer to avoid the drama Marsch experienced three years ago.
