'I saw some matches': Hansi Flick admits he is 'surprised' by one Newcastle player

Newcastle United could have the element of surprise when they face Barcelona on Thursday night.

The Magpies kick off their Champions League campaign in the biggest way possible, with Barcelona heading to St James’ Park.

It is a mouthwatering tie, and Toon confidence is high after Saturday’s win over Wolves. Nick Woltemade’s debut was one to remember, and the hope is that he can carry momentum into the Champions League.

It was pleasantly surprising to see him perform so well on his debut, and another person who Woltemade has surprised is Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

Hansi Flick believes Nick Woltemade has a lot of ‘potential’

Ahead of Newcastle United against Barcelona, Flick has spoken to the media.

He was asked about Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, having previously managed the Germany national team between August 2021 and September 2023. During that period, Flick did not pick what was a relatively unknown Woltemade.

“I didn’t know him much,” he said.

“I saw some matches. I was really surprised about how he increased his level. For the Premier League, he’s a good option for every coach.

“I’m happy. We’ll see how he improves. I think he has a lot of potential to improve. In the Premier League, you have to improve to play.

How Newcastle United and Nick Woltemade can hurt Barcelona

Newcastle United are going to be up against it on Thursday night, but will not fear Barcelona.

Eddie Howe’s side have proven in the past that they can hang with the best, obliterating PSG 4-1 in their previous Champions League campaign.

The Magpies blew PSG away that night, and will attempt to do the same to Barcelona. With Nick Woltemade in the side, there is a chance they can do that.

Following his arrival at St James’ Park, it was reported by the Athletic that Newcastle think Woltemade can help unleash the pace of players like Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga.

That will hopefully come to fruition on Thursday night, as Barcelona utilise a high line that can be exposed by speed.

Howe’s team have the tools to do just that, with the aforementioned trio of Woltemade, Gordon and Elanga all featuring in Geordie Boot Boys’predicted Newcastle XI to face Barcelona.
