From Italy: Juventus plotting 2026 swoop for Manchester City star amid contract uncertainty

**Bernardo Silva is attracting interest from Turin as he progresses into the final year of his current Manchester City deal, as per a new report from Italy.**

Silva has been allowed to enter the last 12 months of his current contract at the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola appointing the Portugal international as Manchester City captain after the summer departures of Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson.

The 31-year-old is one of Guardiola’s longest serving players in the Manchester City ranks, having joined the Blues from AS Monaco for £43 million in 2017 after helping AS Monaco to the 2016-17 Ligue 1 title.

It is no secret that Silva has been open to leaving Manchester City since the summer of 2020, when he was close to joining Barcelona but a transfer failed to materialise owing to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the La Liga giants.

Silva also expressed a desire internally to seek a new challenge in the seasons that followed but suitor clubs have failed to table bids matching Manchester City’s valuation of the six-time Premier League winner, who has been a hugely popular figure behind the scenes at the Etihad Stadium.

In his third season in charge of the Blues, Guardiola famously remarked that Silva would stay with him throughout his Manchester City managerial career, which only goes to show how highly the Portuguese is rated by his club manager.

Having handed Silva the captaincy in pre-season, Guardiola has trusted the playmaker to rally his troops as Manchester City seek to dethrone Liverpool as Premier League champions after enduring a sub-par third place finish in the league last term.

City have previously held a reluctance in allowing senior players to enter the final year of their contracts, largely to avoid the risk of losing them on a free transfer when their contracts expire. However, a change in policy has been witnessed at the Etihad Stadium over the years, with Gundogan and De Bruyne leaving on a free in 2023 and 2025 respectively.

[Tuttosport](https://www.tuttosport.com/) report that having taken encouragement from De Bruyne’s free transfer from Manchester City to Napoli this summer, Juventus are eyeing a similar swoop for Silva should he see out the rest of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, as relayed by [Football Italia](https://football-italia.net/bernardo-silva-target-juventus-manchester-city/).

It is still fairly early into the season to hold contract talks with Silva’s camp – led by super agent Jorge Mendes – as clubs across Europe keep a close eye on how the Portugal international gets on in terms of form and fitness over the coming months.

Silva can formally negotiate with clubs over a free transfer next summer from January 1 2026, which could see Manchester City’s newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana express a desire to renew his compatriot’s contract in the coming months.

Guardiola has two years remaining on his current deal and should Silva maintain the standards of form and fitness he has set form himself over the years, Manchester City will not want to waste any time in offering the midfielder renewed terms and an extension.
