Newcastle United v Barcelona team news as six players injured - four ruled out due to UEFA rules

Newcastle United v Barcelona team news ahead of the Champions League clash at St James’ Park.

It is 28 years this week since the Magpies famously beat the Spanish giants 3-2 on Tyneside courtesy of Tino Asprilla’s hat-trick.

Now, Eddie Howe’s men will be hoping for a repeat of that success as they look to get their European campaign off to a flyer. Ahead of the game, we take a look at the latest team news from both camps.

Yoane Wissa (Newcastle United) - out

Wissa, a £55million deadline day signing from Brentford, is yet to make his debut for the Magpies after sustaining a knee injury on international duty with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The 29-year-old missed the 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday and will remain sidelined for the next six matches at least.

Eddie Howe said: “Yoane will, we hope, be back after the next international break, so that's the plan. That can always change, it's always flexible, but I think that's what I've been told.”

Jacob Ramsey (Newcastle United) - out

Jacob Ramsey picked up an ankle injury on his first start for Newcastle after joining from Aston Villa for £39million.

Howe explained: “Jacob Ramsey's the only other injury concern that we have, he'll miss the game [Wolves] having suffered from that tackle against Leeds.

“His ankle swelled up at half time, meant he had to come off and unfortunately I think he'll be missing until the next international break so that's a big blow.”

Jamaal Lascelles, Harrison Ashby, John Ruddy & Mark Gillespie (Newcastle United) - out

The quartet are ineligible after being left out of Newcastle’s Champions League squad list.

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) - out

There is an ongoing feud between Barcelona and the Spain national team after Yamal was given painkillers to feature in his country’s 6-0 World Cup qualifier victory in Turkey.

Since returning from international duty last week, the 18-year-old has been unable to train due to a groin issue.

Barca boss Hansi Flick said: “They had at least a three-goal lead in both matches, and he still played 73 and 79 minutes. Between the games, he wasn’t able to train. That’s not looking after the player. I’m very sad about this."

Gavi (Barcelona) - out

Gavi has missed the last two matches with a knee injury and won’t return against Newcastle United.

Alejandro Balde (Barcelona) - out

The left-back is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.

The Barcelona No.1 sustained a long-term injury in August.
