Daniel Farke addresses Leeds United scoring problem amid private Brenden Aaronson chat

Daniel Farke has called on his Leeds United players to be more efficient in front of goal and has made it a focal training point this week.

The manager has organised small sided-games to build the confidence and scoring ‘instinct’ of his attackers, but says the issue does not have an overnight fix. Leeds have scored just one Premier League goal so far this season, and none at all from open play.

Farke is not concerned about the amount of chances his team have created, with 10 shots fired in at Fulham. But in terms of accuracy and clinical edge, the boss is aiming to inspire his players to do better.

He said: “In the first 75 minutes against Fulham we had better chances. What we have to improve is the cutting edge, the efficiency to score more goals. This is the only thing to criticise.

“It's to work a bit on the clinical edge. Definitely a major topic in the training ground to bring players [in scoring positions].”

Farke added: “It's not like if you train for one or two games they will turn into prime Ronaldo.

“It’s about getting them back into form. We have had small sided games with scoring to build the instincts. I’m happy with what I have seen in training.”

Also during Thursday’s press conference at Thorp Arch, Farke was quizzed about Brenden Aaronson. The American was deployed on the right wing on Saturday, ahead of Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James, both injury doubts for the trip to Wolves.

Aaronson looks set to start again if neither makes the cut. While his work rate is appreciated by Farke, the manager has not hidden the fact the attacker must improve his offensive output.

“I have to defend him a little bit. I was pretty pleased with his defensive work,” Farke said of Aaronson’s performance versus Fulham. “We know he has challenges in his offence game - it is something we've spoken about.

“We can't press a button and he becomes clinical but bring him in training where he is in such positions. We want goals and assists and in the end he has to deliver or else a different [squad] player will come in.

“But it’s not like he's not motivated - but that he is so on it, that he loses his actions. When you have a player and he has covered more distance - if he adds creativity and class, he can be even better.

“I want my players to give hard work and Brenden does that. If he wants to become a regular he has to improve with our help his offensive outcome.”
