“Too Many”–Thierry Henry Issues Warning To Liverpool About Their Champions League Hopes

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry claims Liverpool are currently conceding “too many goals” to be in contention to win the Champions League this campaign

The Reds were 2-0 up against Atletico Madrid before being pegged back to 2-2 on Wednesday night. The Merseysiders required a last-gasp header from captain Virgil van Dijk to seal the three points. Henry has warned that they need to tighten up defensively or they will be found out in Europe:

“I do think, from pre-season, they concede too many goals. They got bailed out again the other day against Burnley, and you have to find a way to win games, so we’re not complaining about that.”

“But in the Champions League, if you concede too many goals, it’s a tough one to win.”

Atletico would have been lucky, NOT Liverpool

The Spanish club accrued just 0.56 xG to Liverpool’s 2.72 at Anfield on Wednesday evening. Ex-referee Mark Clattenberg has said that Marcos Llorente’s first goal should have been ruled out for offside, due to Antoine Griezmann obstructing the view of Alisson.

Llorente’s second was also a fluke, as his shot took a big deflection off Alexis Mac Allister before finding the back of the net.

On most other days, the Reds would have kept a clean sheet. Henry is right that the Reds started the season sloppily defensively, but they have been solid in their last three fixtures versus Arsenal, Burnley and Atletico.

Who are Liverpool’s next opponents in the Champions League?

Arne Slot’s team will face Galatasaray in Turkey at the end of this month. Reds fans will then have to wait until after the next international break for another European game.

They will travel to take on Hugo Ekitike’s former club, Eintracht Frankfurt, in Germany on October 22nd.
