West Ham fans put among ‘most extreme European fan bases’ as they head for weekend derby

West Ham United fans heading to watch the Rome derby between Lazio and Roma are being put among the ‘most extreme European fan bases’ for the game.

That’s [according to Gazzetta dello Sport](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Lazio/18-09-2025/derby-di-roma-attesi-ultras-da-tutta-l-europa.shtml), who cover the planning for the Rome derby today as authorities look to avoid any problems this year.

They explain that with over 60,000 spectators expected for the game the usual alerts have been put in place by authorities, with a 12:30pm quick off not enough to quell fears for a match that has always seen incidents of unrest both inside and outside the Olimpico stadium in recent years.

A meeting was held at the provincial committee for security and public order today in which the critical issues were discussed. This involved the number of police being deployed – the maximum has been requested – and monitoring of arrival in the capital of foreign ultra groups twinned with their respective fan clubs.

While the Roma south stand will be filled with Atletico Madrid ultras, Panathinaikos fans and Dinamo Zagreb supporters, the Lazio side will have fans from West Ham, Wisla Krakow, Levski Sofia and Leipzig.

When it comes to the West Ham fans Gazzetta say there has ‘never been a shortage’ of them for these games, thanks to the strong relationship between the two sides.

It seems, though, at least if the newspaper is anything to go by, they’re considered to be among the ‘most extreme European fan bases’ and the police and authorities will be keeping a close eye on them as a result.
