An update on Morgan Rogers’ future as Arsenal and Tottenham eye the Aston Villa star.
Aston Villa would have reportedly considered selling Morgan Rogers in the summer if a bid was received which met their secret asking price.
Rogers, arguably Villa’s most valuable asset, has been a revolutionary signing. Hand-picked by Unai Emery, Rogers joined from Middlesbrough in January 2024 in a deal worth merely £8 million plus £7 million in add-ons and his stock has soared ever since.
Now a fully-fledged England international with eight senior caps, Rogers has scored 17 goals and notched 17 assists in 75 appearances for Villa to date. Not only that, but he’s provided supporters with so many breathtaking moments with his direct dribbling and powerful sprints, often lighting up matches.
Morgan Rogers asking price unveiled
Given how important Rogers is to Villa and to Emery’s structure, it came as no surprise when Birmingham World was repeatedly told throughout the recent transfer window that the attacking midfielder was not for sale under any circumstances. Several Premier League clubs were circling, but Villa were standing firm.
There may have been a price point Villa would have weighed up selling at after all, however. In a recent deep dive into Villa’s turbulent summer window, The Telegraph claims Villa would have ‘considered’ offers in excess of £80 million. Previously, reports suggested Villa valued Rogers at closer to £100 million.
An excerpt from The Telegraph’s article reads: “Morgan Rogers was on the radar of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, plus one other club from the traditional big six, but Villa were intent on keeping him. Only a fee of more than £80m would have been considered, and that hardline stance remained. No official offers were received and Rogers did not push to leave.”
Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham encouraged
Villa have worked hard to deal with a host of financial complications in recent windows but that doesn’t mean they are out of the woods just yet. Further efforts must be made to reduce the wage bill to UEFA’s squad cost rules (SCR), while it’s expected to be another close shave with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) next June.
This could mean another big sale is required, following Jacob Ramsey’s recent £40 million move to Newcastle United and Douglas Luiz’s £42 million departure for Juventus last summer. Even the huge profit from Jhon Duran’s £64 million move to Al-Nassr wasn’t quite enough.
If Villa do find themselves in trouble with PSR again at the end of the season, there may be a temptation to sell Rogers. With that in mind, as well as The Telegraph’s claim about an £80 million price tag, the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham can be encouraged that a deal may be possible at some stage.
