Tottenham made unsuccessful summer attempt to grab defensive ace; Real Madrid come up trumps

Tottenham Hotspur missed out on Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid

Tottenham fans raised a lot of concerns after the Lilywhites failed to bring in a new centre-back in the summer. Seeing how the North London club struggled at the back last season due to an injury crisis, many fans believed that bringing in a new defender was seen as the priority for Spurs. However, the club thought otherwise and opted to stick with the players they had instead.

In hindsight, this decision has worked out pretty well for Spurs. Against all odds, the Lilywhites have managed to keep four clean sheets in their opening five games of the new season. This is largely due to Thomas Frank’s system that has allowed the backline to be compact and resolute without the ball. Not only that, but the brilliance of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero has also proved to be a major plus for Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur missed out on Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid.

Tottenham were keen to sign Dean Huijsen at one point early in the summer.

There is also enough depth at the back, with Kevin Danso and Ben Davies patiently waiting for their chance to feature in the starting eleven. To add to that, the Lilywhites have also welcomed back Radu Dragusin into first-team training after the Romanian recovered from an ACL injury.

Tottenham did try to sign Dean Huijsen before he made the Real Madrid move

Earlier this year, it was reported that Tottenham were keen to land Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth in the summer. Daniel Levy was working hard behind the scenes to try and lure the Spaniard to N17, with the Lilywhites also indicating that they were open to trigger the £50m release clause in Huijsen’s contract. However, the prolific defender chose to snub Spurs and move to Real Madrid instead after the season ended.

Now, Huijsen’s agent Ali Barat has confirmed that Tottenham were one of many clubs that did try to sign the 20-year-old. Speaking to AS (via Sport Witness), Barat said,

“When they (Real Madrid) came along, it was an easy decision: there were many clubs, but with Real Madrid, there was no doubt. And of course, after playing for the national team, we had about seven big clubs: Bayern, Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle… They all wanted Dean, to be honest.”

There is no surprise that Spurs chose to throw their name in the hat for Dean Huijsen’s signature. The Spain international is arguably one of the best talents in Europe right now, and it is only fair that the Lilywhites gave a good go to lure him to N17. But the likelihood of landing the prolific centre-back was always going to be minimal, especially when Real Madrid came calling.

Will Spurs regret not signing Huijsen in the future? Probably not. The Lilywhites have enough cover at the back for now. Also, what most fans seem to forget is that Tottenham have Luka Vuskovic in their ranks who might just turn out to be as good as Huijsen in the future.
