Liverpool dealt blow in pursuit of 25-year-old summer target amid Real Madrid links

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have received a massive blow in their pursuit of Crystal Palace defensive mainstay Marc Guehi.

According to a report from the Mirror, Marc Guehi could snub Liverpool to join Real Madrid in the near future. While he was within touching distance of joining the Merseyside club, the deal collapsed on deadline day. With the ball now in his court, the player seems to prefer joining Los Blancos.

While things did not go according to plan for Guehi at Chelsea, he has only gone from strength to strength since joining Crystal Palace. Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but the 25-year-old is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in England.

Guehi has been on the wishlist of multiple top clubs for a while now. The English international was expected to be on the move in the summer. He was within touching distance of joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

The Reds had an agreement in place with Crystal Palace to sign the 25-year-old in a deal worth £35 million. However, Steve Parish pulled the plug on the deal in the eleventh hour as the South London club failed to sign an ideal replacement for Oliver Glasner’s team.

While Guehi could not get his desired move to Liverpool this summer, he is expected to be on the move in the near future, with his contract running down. He could secure a move in the winter or leave the club for free next summer. The 25-year-old is free to sign a pre-agreement with a foreign club starting in January, and the ball is certainly now in his corner.

Guehi wants Real Madrid move

Liverpool will be looking to revive their pursuit of the English international at the turn of the calendar. With Ibrahima Konate’s contract running out, Guehi is their priority target for the role. However, the 25-year-old could now snub the Merseyside club to join Real Madrid.

Real Madrid are already keen on securing the services of Konate, and they are also exploring the possibility of signing Guehi on a free transfer. The Englishman has made it clear to his advisors that joining the Spanish giants is his top priority.

The English centre-back has his heart set on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, and that could spell a double blow for Liverpool, with Konate potentially on his way out.
