Tottenham confident of extending star defender’s stay at N17 amid Real Madrid links

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has quickly become a vital part of the squad under Thomas Frank this season

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has made an impressive start under Thomas Frank this season. Since his move from Wolfsburg in 2023, the Dutchman has begun to showcase his full potential and has quickly established himself as a key figure in the Danish tactician’s set-up at N17.

This season, the North London club arguably boasts one of the strongest defensive pairings in the Premier League. Van de Ven and Cristian Romero have built a formidable partnership at the back, helping Spurs record four clean sheets in the matches they have played together. Fans will hope both players can stay fit as Frank looks to build on last season’s Europa League success.

Tottenham cannot afford to lose Micky van de Ven anytime soon.

Tottenham cannot afford to lose Micky van de Ven anytime soon.

For Van de Ven, the talented centre-back has repeatedly shown that he is almost irreplaceable at N17. The Dutchman’s impact at both ends of the pitch clearly shows he has already taken huge strides under Frank. Standout performances against Villarreal and West Ham further underline that there is much more to his game than meets the eye.

Tottenham cannot afford to lose Micky van de Ven next summer

Earlier reports suggested that Real Madrid were targeting a new centre-back for next summer and had identified Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven as a leading candidate. The La Liga giants were prepared to offer the Dutchman regular game time under Xabi Alonso. However, the Lilywhites informed the Spanish club that they would only consider deals if their €80 million valuation for the 24-year-old was met.

Now, Mick Brown believes Spurs will aim to line up a new contract for Van de Ven to avoid losing him to Real Madrid next summer. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown revealed,

“Tottenham want Van de Ven to commit his future to the club. They want to put an end to the speculation and any interest from clubs like Real Madrid and the others who have been linked over the summer. He’s been brilliant since he went to Tottenham and everybody there seems to love him.”

The ex-scout also admitted,

“The way he plays is perfect for the way Frank wants his team to play, and there’s no way the manager will want to lose one of his most important players. I can’t see any situation in which Tottenham would want to lose him, to be honest. So from their point of view, it makes sense that they want to get him tied down to a new contract, and I think they’re pretty confident they can get it done.”

According to Mick Brown, Tottenham have no intention of losing Micky van de Ven and are ready to offer him a new contract before the Dutchman starts considering other options. The ex-scout believes the 24-year-old is perfectly suited to Frank’s tactical set-up, making his departure highly unlikely. Brown also reveals that Spurs are confident of extending Van de Ven’s stay at N17, as the player still has a lot to prove in England.
