Ruben Amorim has warned his Manchester United players they cannot pick and choose the games they turn up and perform in. United travel to Brentford in Saturday's early kick-off with Amorim going for back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since taking charge nearly a year ago.

The Portuguese head coach has only won nine of his 32 league games in charge and has failed to follow up any of those victories with another triumph. Against that backdrop, Amorim has told his players they must show the same energy, focus and aggression they display against the so-called smaller teams, not just the big guns.

“The important thing is to do the maximum and to face the game like we faced Liverpool last year and the way we started the season against Arsenal,” said Amorim.

“We were really excited to start the season, but we should have that feeling all the time. So we're in the beginning. We won the last game, we need to do everything to win against Brentford and we need to win the game.

“We need to win the next game. It's not about 10 wins in a row. I'm talking about winning the second one, then the third one, then the feeling will change.

“If we, as a team, don't understand the momentum now, we have a big problem. Anything could happen in a game, especially in the Premier League, and you can see that in every game.

“But the feeling in the first minutes is really important so, for me, since we started the first training, we started talking about that. We need to understand the momentum of the club and the opportunity that we have to win the next game. So it's on us - the responsibility is on us.”

United will be without winger Amad for Saturday's trip to Brentford, after he was granted compassionate leave following a family bereavement.

Amorim said: “Amad is not here because someone in his family passed away. We are giving all the support to Amad. We are here for him. It's a tough moment and, in this kind of moment, the next game is not important. We can win without Amad and we want to win also for him."

United will also be without Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro for the match. "Licha is out. Casemiro is out because of the red card," Amorim added.

"Amad is not here because someone in his family passed away. We are giving all the support to Amad and understood he needed to return home," he said. "He [Mazraoui] is out also. He will not be back until the international break."
