Barcelona battle Liverpool, Real Madrid for 26-year-old Bayern Munich star

Barcelona are all set to rival Liverpool and Real Madrid for the services of Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

According to a report from Fichajes, Barcelona have entered the race for the signature of Dayot Upamecano, who could be available for free next summer with his contract at Bayern Munich running out. The Catalan giants are all set to battle it out with Liverpool and Real Madrid, who are also keen on signing the French centre-back.

Upamecano joined the German giants in the summer of 2021 after making a name for himself at RB Leipzig. He has only gone from strength to strength since and has established himself as a key figure in the team.

The 26-year-old has been involved in seven matches in the new campaign and has racked up over 500 minutes. While he remains an integral part of their plans, his future is up in the air because of his contract situation.

His current deal runs out at the end of the season, and Bayern have been working on a potential contract extension for a while now. But, they are facing major obstacles with regard to his salary and other terms.

The French defender is demanding wages that put him on par with Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. But Bayern doesn’t seem keen on meeting those demands. While sporting director Max Eberl has suggested that talks are ongoing and extending his stay is a priority, time is running out. The 26-year-old will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs as early as January.

European giants to battle for Upamecano

Barcelona are well aware of his situation and would love to make the most out of it. Given their financial situation, they would love to sign a defender of his quality and experience for free. With Inigo Martinez no longer at the club, they certainly lack quality and depth, and Upamecano could prove to be a valuable addition.

The Catalan giants are ready to rival Liverpool and Real Madrid, who have been keeping a close eye on the Bayern defender for some time. With Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain, the Merseyside club see Upamecano as an ideal replacement.

Meanwhile, Los Blancos are looking to add another world-class defender to their ranks despite having signed Dean Huijsen in the summer. With Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba likely to leave, they want a quality option at the back, and Upamecano is one of the names on their wishlist.
