Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has previously lauded Gareth Southgate amid reports that the former England boss is shortlisted to replace Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese head coach is under pressure after suffering their latest defeat in Saturday's 3-1 disappointment at Brentford.

The loss meant that United still haven't won back-to-back Premier League games under Amorim as they failed to carry the momentum from their win over Chelsea last weekend. United slipped to 14th with Brentford leapfrogging them in the process and it has led to reports that a managerial shortlist is already being compiled to replace the 40-year-old.

TalkSPORT claimed that Southgate was among the three shortlisted to replace Amorim in the Old Trafford hotseat, alongside Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth.

United left-back, Shaw, has previously spoken highly of Southgate after establishing himself as a regular in Southgate's international squads, when he wasn't sidelined through injury.

Following criticism of the tactician, Shaw was there to defend the former England boss.

"To be honest, I don’t really understand the criticism," he said last July. “I think what he’s done for the country, for us as players as well. I think he’s really took us to the next level. I think no manager has really been as successful as him as what he’s done recently.

“It’s now another semi-final, and for me and us as players we love him. I think he’s really good. He’s exactly what we need. For us, he always puts the players first and for that we’re able to go out on the pitch and try to be at our best.

“I think, for me, personally, I’ve got a lot to thank him for, because he showed a lot of faith and trust in picking me when he didn’t have to. For that, I’ll always be thankful.

“But for me now I need to repay the faith that he’s shown in me.”

The former England head coach has been out of work since resigning in the wake of the Three Lions' disappointing defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. However, he has been frequently linked with the United post.

Last October, Southgate announced that he wouldn't return to management within the year following speculation that he could replace Erik ten Hag at United.

"I won't coach in the next year, for sure. I'm certain of that," Southgate said. "I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time."

However, BBC Sport have reported that sources have suggested that Amorim retains the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe with the view that the Portuguese tactician will be judged after a full season in charge.
