'Terrible' - Alan Shearer says Man United should feel aggrieved by what happened vs Brentford

Manchester United once again failed to make it back-to-back Premier League wins under Ruben Amorim with a frustrating defeat to Brentford.

Every step forward under Ruben Amorim seems to be followed by two steps backward, and that was the case once again this weekend as Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brentford.

Saturday’s trip to London presented a chance for the Red Devils to enter the top four with a victory, but instead United find themselves slumped in 14th place.

A woeful start to the match saw United fall two goals behind early on, but Benjamin Sesko scored his first United goal to halve the deficit in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty which would have drawn United level, but even with a spot kick, fans left the stadium feeling decisions didn’t go their way against the Bees.

Alan Shearer says referee made mistake in Man United defeat

When Bryan Mbeumo was taken down in the box, referee Craig Pawson took a couple of seconds before pointing to the spot.

That was followed by a lengthy VAR check, which ended in Nathan Collins avoiding a red card despite denying Mbeumo a goalscoring opportunity.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Alan Shearer argued that United can feel “aggrieved” by the decision as Collins should have been sent off for the challenge.

“So they should [feel aggrieved],” Shearer said. “Yes they got the penalty, but what they didn’t get right is that it should have been a red card as well.

“They get it right in terms of the referee’s call, he gives a penalty for the pull back. But what they didn’t get right is that they checked the referee’s call of a yellow card to Collins and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball.

“Honestly, it’s just a terrible decision. He can’t be in control of the ball because someone is pulling him back. He’s a yard from the ball, clearly!”

“He should have been sent off, absolutely no doubt about it.”

Ruben Amorim and Mark Clattenburg agree on red card

After the full-time whistle, Amorim wasn’t keen to hand his side excuses for the result, but he did speak openly about the red card controversy.

The referee told Amorim that Mbeumo wasn’t in control, but Shearer explains why that argument makes no sense. Without intervention, Mbeumo would have had a clear goalscoring opportunity.

To strengthen the argument, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg slammed the VAR decision and argued “this is why people are falling out of love with football”.

The decision came at a time which could have completely changed the momentum in the game, yet United are left with no points and another defeat.
