Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure at Manchester United after a 3-1 defeat to Brentford
Manchester United have reportedly drawn up a three-man shortlist for potential replacements if they opt to part ways with manager Ruben Amorim.
United chiefs are desperate for Amorim to succeed at the club, with Ineos keen for the man they hired to be the one to eventually turn their fortunes around. There has been an emphasis on patience throughout Amorim’s tenure.
A key factor in any managerial sacking would be who could take charge instead. United have won two of their six games in the Premier League and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of League Two Grimsby Town.
Man Utd have three-man shortlist for new manager candidates
According to a report from talkSPORT, former England boss Gareth Southgate is a potential option for United if they decide to sack Amorim. The ex-Middlesbrough boss is also said to have been in direct contact with United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘in recent weeks’.
The report adds that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola are the other potential replacements. Amorim is likely to stay in post until after November 1, when the level of compensation to sack him would be significantly reduced.
United had garnered some positivity after beating Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford but they have struggled to put a run of results together under Amorim and that continued on Saturday as they went 1-0 down after eight minutes against Brentford and never got back on terms.
What Ruben Amorim said after Man Utd’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford
Asked how to get consistency in the squad, Amorim said after the loss to Brentford: "You work on everything - work on everything. The frustration is that the goals today, we worked on that during the week. That is frustrating. We can do better with the ball. We can have more control.
“We can understand that sometimes when the decisions are not in our favour, the momentum is not in your favour, we can control the ball - we can settle down the game. That is something that I know this team can do, but when things are against us - the penalty, the foul before the first goal - all these things are against us, we need to have more personality to control the game."
He added: "It’s like ups and downs. When you win, you feel that everything, the momentum is there. When you lose, you go back to the same place and you fight again for one win that can help you to create the momentum. Guys, I'm always doing my job. If I win, I'm in a different state of mind. That is normal. I'm always confident because I know what to do."
