Manchester United considering surprise move for 50-year-old former Chelsea manager to replace…

Graham Potter is the latest name to be linked with succeeding Ruben Amorim should Manchester United part ways with their current manager.

According to Fichajes, Ruben Amorim’s job is under fresh scrutiny following the result against Brentford. While the public stance suggests his job remains safe, the report states that Graham Potter could be the latest name to be added to the list of candidates to replace the Portuguese tactician.

Graham Potter became the second manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season, following an underwhelming spell at West Ham. Incidentally, Nuno Espirito Santo, who was the first casualty this season among top-flight clubs, has replaced the 50-year-old former Chelsea manager at the London Stadium.

Much like Espirito Santo, Potter may not have to wait too long to get back into a new role, as Manchester United have added him to their list of candidates to replace Ruben Amorim. There will be question marks about the viability of appointing the 50-year-old former Chelsea manager as the Portuguese’s successor, given his own track record of late.

Since his consistent spell at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he gained recognition as a tactically astute manager, Potter has gone off a cliff following terrible spells at Chelsea and now West Ham. While he’s seen as an option by Manchester United to replace Amorim, the 50-year-old is not the only name under consideration.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate has the backing of Teddy Sheringham to take over at Manchester United, while the likes of Marco Silva are also under consideration. Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola could be the primary targets in many regards, and Graham Potter could be way below in the pecking order of managerial choices for Manchester United.

How safe is Ruben Amorim’s role at Manchester United?

The reports surrounding Amorim’s future have been inconsistent at best, as a recent story claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe fully backed the Portuguese manager to continue. However, results continued to go against Amorim, as the latest defeat to Brentford on Saturday was another piece of evidence that things aren’t working out for him at Manchester United.

Hence, if Amorim fails to deliver in the coming weeks, there could be a case for Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to consider about his future. While his job could be safe for the time being, things could change rapidly in no time, with a host of candidates seen as alternatives to Amorim to lead the club forward.
