September 28 – The UN has blacklisted a construction company owned by Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, for operating in occupied Palestinian land using local resources to build infrastructure that helps sustain Israel’s illegal settlements.

The black listing of ACS (Actividades de Construcción y Servicios, S.A.) and its subsidiary SEMI comes at an embarrassing time for Perez as his country and its football community has been increasing its criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and the acts of genocide and daily civilian deaths at the hands of Israeli military.

ACS is a global business in the development, construction, and operation of engineering, construction, and infrastructure projects. SEMI (Sociedad Española De Montajes Industriales, S.A.) is .an industrial and electricity company

There are a total of 158 companies on the UN blacklist, 70 of them, including the two owned by Perez, were added by the UN following an independent international fact-finding mission in the territories.

The UN accuses the blacklisted companies of “providing equipment or materials that facilitate the construction and maintenance of settlements, the demolition of Palestinian homes or properties, as well as surveillance activities, the use of natural resources for commercial purposes, or pollution and dumping.”

A estimated 700,000 Jewish settlers live in at least 250 illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

ACS has reportedly denied having contracts in either occupied Palestine or in Israel though has issued no formal statement in that regard. The company reportedly attributes its mention to the sale of its SEM subsidiary to the French group Vinci.

Real Madrid and its fans have been one of the few clubs in Spain that haven’t condemned the Israeli military’s action in Gaza. Osasuna fans recently displayed a banner saying ‘Give Israel a Red Card’ at a match against Real Madrid.
