Luke Steele called Roy Carroll a 'really good guy'

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll and Dev from Coronation Street once had a 'furious bust-up' at a club Christmas party, according to one of his Old Trafford team-mates.

Carroll, who celebrates his 47th birthday today (September 30) played at Old Trafford for four years, competing with a number of goalkeepers, including Luke Steele, as Sir Alex Ferguson looked to find his replacement for Peter Schmeichel. He is perhaps best remembered for his infamous 'save' against Tottenham in 2005, when Spurs star Pedro Mendes shot from the halfway line.

Carroll was caught unawares and fumbled the ball, which clearly crossed the line, before he bundled it away, but the dopey linesman didn't award the goal and the game finished in a 0-0 draw. But that wasn't the only time the Northern Irish shot-stopped became embroiled in controversy.

During an appearance on the Undr The Cosh Podcast in November 2020, former team-mate Steele claimed Carroll was also left in a desperate scramble while the two were at United together.

According to the former Football League goalkeeper, Carroll got involved in a scrap with actor Jimmi Harkishin, who has played Dev Alahan on Coronation Street since 1999.

Speaking on the podcast, Steele said: “I remember Dev off Coronation Street, him and Roy Carroll going at it. Which is the two most random characters.

“I was steaming just trying to get the girls and I remember looking and thinking, ah, Roy Carroll’s having a fight with Dev. You blink and you miss something."

Steele went on to explain that his fellow goalkeeper was a decent bloke, though, as he added: “He [Carroll] liked a drink and all the rest of it, really good guy.”

He also admitted that he had no idea why the pair had gotten into a fight and that he did not get involved in trying to break up the scuffle.

Carroll spent four years at United after joining from Wigan Athletic in 2001 and went on to make 72 appearances for the club before leaving for West Ham United.

During his time at the club, Carroll competed with the likes of Fabien Barthez and Tim Howard for the number one jersey and also won the Premier League and the FA Cup with the Red Devils.

As for Steele, he never made a first team appearance for United after arriving from Peterborough United in 2001 and left the club after five years to join West Bromwich Albion.
