Gareth Southgate is reportedly a name that Man United are considering as a replacement for Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United’s brief spell of getting back to winning ways didn’t last long after their victory against Chelsea at Old Trafford. The Red Devils made the trip to Brentford on Saturday and tasted defeat again, as they lost 3-1.
There have been several names linked with the managerial job at United, including former England manager Gareth Southgate, who has been without a job since he stepped down from the national team, following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
Man United should sign Glasner instead of Southgate
First of all, it has to be said that Southgate’s record for England was excellent, he managed to get closer than any manager has to silverware since 1966, however, he isn’t the right man for the job at United.
Southgate decided to quit the England job, in part due to the sheer amount of criticism he was getting, so imagine if things went wrong at United? The pressure and criticism on Southgate would be immense. Furthermore, Southgate’s experience managing in club football is limited, so it would be a big risk to bring him in rather than someone more proven.
So if not Southgate then who? Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has been one of the best managers in the Premier League over the past year. His Palace side are currently 18 games unbeaten, and over the weekend, managed to beat champions Liverpool to leave themselves third in the league table.
Glasner also managed to bring the first major piece of silverware to Selhurst Park, as Palace won the FA Cup last year, and he will hope to make an impact for the club in Europe too. If United were to replace Amorim, Glasner has to be considered over Southgate, as his record at Palace has been impeccable. The 18-game unbeaten run is a joint club record.
Glasner also plays the same system as Amorim, and is clearly getting the best out of his players at Selhurst Park. It makes him the perfect candidate for the job.
Who else could Man United tempt if Amorim sacked?
Reports have said that United are in direct contact with Southgate, and that Oliver Glasner is also on their short-list for potential Amorim replacements. It has also been said that there is another name to consider, and that comes in the form of Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
He almost helped the Cherries to European football last season, and seems to be doing the same this year too, with his side sitting sixth in the Premier League after six matches so far. They have managed to beat the likes of Brighton and Spurs under Iraola so far this year.
Fulham’s Marco Silva has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past, but he doesn’t seem to be in the same likelihood as Glasner, Iraola and Southgate. However, he would also fit the mould of a proven Premier League manager who has previously delivered success.
